SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security protocol that is designed to provide secure communication over the internet. SSL works by establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser. This link ensures that all data transmitted between the two parties remains private and confidential. SSL uses a combination of public key and symmetric key encryption to provide secure communication. When SSL is used, a padlock icon will appear in the web browser’s address bar, indicating that the website is secure and that any data transmitted to or from the site is encrypted. SSL has been succeeded by the newer TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol, but the term SSL is still commonly used to refer to the encryption of web traffic. For free SSL certificates check out Let’s Encrypt.
